Training for CCSD Teachers on Don-Johnston Assistive Software

The Special Education/Pupil Services Department purchased thirty individual licenses for assistive software from Don Johnston.  On Tuesday, December 18th, in collaboration with the district technology facilitators, three training sessions were held to introduce Snap & Read and Co-Writer Universal (8:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m., and 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.).  A description for each program appears below.

Training was open to any special education teacher or building interventionist working with students that could benefit from this software, including ELL students.  Thirty-two staff members from the district signed up for the training.

Here are the descriptions for the two programs:

Snap&Read:  Reading tool for Google Chrome

  • Reads text aloud across websites, PDFs, and Google Drive,
  • Adjusts the readability of text without changing meaning,
  • Translates text into over 100 languages on any webpage and text can be read in multiple languages,
  • Pulls text into an outline or note page for study or research purposes,
  • Removes distractions from ‘busy’ websites,
  • Provides color overlays and readings line guides,
  • Provides definitions of words with multiple icon representations and will read definitions aloud,
  • Cites sources on any webpage and can create a bibliography,
  • Contains a screenshot reader and can analyze the readability level of text,
  • Collects data on amount read and readability level of text read, and
  • Highlights and adds text to PDFs that can then be saved to Google Drive.

Co-writer Universal:  Writing tool for Google Chrome

  • Uses word prediction, grammar, translation and speech recognition to support struggling writers,
  • Gives words and phrases it predicts a student is intending to use in ‘real time’,
  • Understands automatically the topic area and predicted topic specific vocabulary,
  • Uses speech to text across formats and will re-read dictated text out loud,
  • Recognizes inventive spelling,
  • Contains over four million preloaded topics with related vocabulary,
  • Supports word prediction across languages, and
  • Tracks data regarding student writing and vocabulary usage.
