Seeing Stars

The CCSD Special Education and Pupil Personnel Services Department has continued to focus on enhancing professional development opportunities for department staff during the current school year.  On November 7th and 8th, special educators and other district support staff, attended the Lindamood-Bell Workshop: Seeing Stars. This evidence-based workshop provided attendees with specialized instructional techniques to support reading and spelling.

Sarah McGillick, a special education teacher from West Nyack Elementary, wrote the following about her experience with this training:

"This training was exactly what I have been looking for in professional development in my area of Special Education (Children with Learning Disabilities).   Lindamood-Bell focuses on Symbol Imagery and how students process letters, sounds and words. Symbol imagery is the ability to be able to visualize sounds and letters within words.  Through the symbol imagery instruction, students are shown how to visualize letters in words and then retrieve them to either read or to write. While I was impressed with knowledge I gained about how students learn to read, I was really impressed with how we had valuable time to practice each teaching method.  As a result, I have already begun using this program with my 1st and 2nd grade groups."

Thank you Sarah for letting our department share this experience.
