March 16, 2021

Dear Parents and Class of 2021:

I hope this email finds you safe and well.

I have been meeting with the senior officers, senior class advisors, Ms. Flores and Ms. Mondesir, regularly since the beginning of February, and last week, I began meeting with the senior parents. During our meetings, I am sharing communications and plans for events or celebrations that may occur despite the circumstances we find ourselves in one year later. There is a reason to celebrate the Class of 2021, their tenacity, diligence and positivity, and we will do our best to make these events a success.

I am happy to share the following information that is available at this time.

  •   Senior Prom:  The Senior Prom this year will take place on June 3, 2021 at Rockleigh Country Club in Rockleigh, New Jersey. The State of New Jersey currently allows up to 150 people per room, and Rockleigh Country Club has two rooms that could accommodate 150 people in each room. With the limited number of individuals allowed, we will not be able to accommodate a date at this time. Although I cannot promise dancing as of yet, I will be continuing to meet with the senior class officers and advisors to develop ideas to make the evening memorable. As we get closer to the event, I will be able to share more specific details.
  •   Graduation:  As of now, the Commencement Exercises for the Class of 2021 are scheduled for Tuesday, June 22. Current State Department of Health Regulations state:  “As of April 2, events can reopen at 33% capacity and up to 100 people indoors and 200 people outdoors. With attendee testing, the capacity increases to 150 people indoors and 500 people outdoors.  Social distancing and masking will be required.”  Based on these guidelines, there are two options available to us:

OPTION 1: Hold commencement exercises at Clarkstown South.  In order to accommodate two guests per graduate we will need to hold seven separate ceremonies over two days.

OPTION 2: Hold commencement exercises at Clarkstown South.  Have two separate ceremonies for seniors only without any guests.

OPTION 3: Hold commencement exercises at Boulder Stadium.  The Boulders have reserved the week of June 21 for school graduations and can accommodate up to 1,000 participants.  This means that we can have one graduation for all students as well as two guests for each graduate.

For each option above, we will be looking into live-streaming services, as well. I am discussing these options with parents and the student representatives.  I will keep you up to date if regulations change or final decisions are made. Finally, if you have yet to order a cap and gown, please email Ms. Gordon at (agordon@ccsd.edu).

  •   Senior Superlatives:  If you missed the Senior Superlative video when it was released on Friday, March 12, don’t worry. It is still available by clicking on this link.
  •   Other Events: The Senior Class Advisors, Representatives, and I have been meeting to discuss other ways to recognize and celebrate the Class of 2021, such as an event for Decision Day, senior class send off, and yearbook distribution.  As soon as information becomes available, I will share it with you.

Finally, all of my email communications are posted on South’s Home Page.  Please look for the link with the label “Class of 2021.”

In the meantime, stay safe, wear masks, and remain socially distant.  We will get through this together.

Sincerely,

Debra Tarantino

Principal, Clarkstown High School South
