BW Students Honor Constitution Day
The United States Constitution is, and has remained, the highest law in our land since it was written in 1787. On December 8th, 2004, President George W. Bush signed a bill which designated every September 17th as Constitution Day. President Bush's vision was to educate each new generation to the uniqueness and brilliance of the Constitution and to show the need to protect and defend it to maintain our liberties. This historical document has endured as a model for democracy for two hundred and thirty one years.
To promote this national day of recognition, Birchwood students created projects that filled the school gymnasium and invited local veterans and guest speaker, Jefferson Crowther. Mr. Crowther is the father of Welles Crowther, a heroic young man who led several people safely out of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. The people he helped only knew him at the time as, "The Man in the Red Bandanna." Mr. Crowther shared a message of what it is to be a hero; even small actions can make a difference in someone else's life.
As a personal tribute to our Constitution, students wore our flag's colors of red, white and blue on that day.
