Capital Project Updates

May 9, 2017

Dear Clarkstown Parents, Guardians and Staff:

Our work on the many district improvement projects is continuing. The next phase involves the installation of new boilers at Felix Festa Middle School as well as North and South High Schools and the Birchwood School. These new boilers will replace units that have far exceeded their useful life.

By beginning the work now, we can ensure the new units will be operational for use in the 2017-18 school year, in time for the cooler weather.

Each boiler project involves the need for asbestos abatement within the boiler room. Plans for this work have been submitted and approved by the New York State Education Department confirming that the proposed project conforms to all federal and state health and safety regulations, and can be done safely within our school environment. The abatement will be completed by PAR Environmental Corporation and monitored by a third party, Adelaide Environmental Health Associates, Inc.

The work will take place after school hours and on weekends and will be isolated within the boiler room areas with restricted access. As an additional safety measure, Adelaide Enviromental will perform air quality monitoring and testing throughout the project.

We anticipate no disruption to the school environment as a result of this work. The start date is Friday, May 12th and should be concluded at FFMS, South High School and Birchwood by May 29th. The North High School abatement will only require two to three days to complete.

As you know, the health and safety of our students and staff is our top priority. Please contact your building principal if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Martin D. Cox
Superintendent of Schools
