South Senior Awarded Scholarships at RCC Foundation Awards Dinner

On November 28, 2018, Clarkstown South Senior Kayla Nueva shined as the sole student awarded two scholarships at the Rockland Community College Foundation's Awards Dinner. Surrounded by her family, peers, RCC faculty and college President Dr. Michael Baston, Kayla proudly accepted the Arthur Mikaylian Memorial Scholarship and the G. Miras Scholarship.

The Arthur Mikaylian Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Arthur Mikaylian, a long-time resident of Rockland County, who believed that one should not only live in a community, but also be an active member of that community. Chosen from a pool of service-minded applicants, Kayla was awarded a $1500 Education Credit for her volunteer work within the community through organizations such as People to People, Meals on Wheels and Youth United Way.

The G. Miras Scholarship hopes to provide recipients the ability to realize the possibilities that lie ahead by giving them the ability to jumpstart their college education while still in high school. As a recipient of the G. Miras Scholarship, Kayla was granted a year of tuition at the community college.

As a member of the Early Admit Program, Kayla attends daily classes at Rockland Community College. She returns to the high school to participate in Youth United Way and Honor Society meetings as well as attend practice for cross-country and fencing. Acceptance into the Sam Draper Honors Program allows her to enroll in honors level classes at the college. Upon graduating from Clarkstown South in June 2019, Kayla intends to transfer her 40+ credits earned during her senior year to a direct-entry Doctor of Pharmacy program.
