The Clarkstown Central School District is proud to announce that Dr. Marianne Strayton — elementary math interventionist at Woodglen Elementary School and district-wide math specialist — has been elected president of the *Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State (AMTNYS). To those who know the beloved math teacher, this announcement should come as no surprise, as Dr. Strayton has been winning titles and awards for years. Before beginning her tenure as AMTNYS president, Dr. Strayton had already been serving as the association's vice president for some time.

Always the innovator, the chipper Dr. Strayton was selected to participate in the New York State Master Teacher Program earlier this year, a nod to her strides made in STEM teaching practices and how much she has to give to students and colleagues alike.

"The model I teach by puts an emphasis on having the maximum amount of kids thinking for the maximum amount of time," she explained. "You're not going to hold the kid in the back of the class's attention that long in a traditional classroom, but what if you have him solving problems on a whiteboard with a group? You'll probably see him thinking a lot more, purely by changing the setting."
