Instructional Models and July 28th BOE Workshop
Dear Clarkstown School Community:
A Board of Education Workshop was held on July 23rd for the purpose of facilitating a presentation and discussion of the Superintendent’s recommendation regarding the instructional models for school reopening. At the meeting, I recommended to the Board of Education the Hybrid Scheduling Model for Grades K-5 and Grades 6-12 with parents also having the option to choose full-time distance learning instruction for their child as below:
- Grades K-5 - A Hybrid, A/B Model which allows 50% of the students to be in school on a rotating A/B basis. The students not in the school will receive instruction via Distance Learning.
- Grades 6-12 - A Hybrid, A, B, C Model which allows 33% of the students to be in school on a rotating A, B, C, basis. The students not in the school will receive instruction via Distance Learning.
-or-
- All Grades - A full-time Distance Learning option is available for students at all grade levels.
The recommendation was made with input from a series of Task Force and Subcommittee meetings, administrator meetings and review of community and staff survey data and community emails, as well as in consideration of all of the state and federal guidance. I am appreciative of the involvement of the school community during this process which began on July 2 and included 19 meetings of the 11 subcommittees, two meetings with the Task Force, and two Board workshops.
During the July 23 Workshop, the Board of Education members asked questions regarding the models I recommended and requested additional data pertaining to alternative options. The Board of Education will meet again for a workshop on Tuesday, July 28th at 4:30 p.m. to continue the review. The Workshop will be live streamed at ccsd.edu/boestream.
The District’s Reopening Schools Plan must be submitted to the New York State Education Department by Friday, July 31st.
Thank you.
Stay strong! Stay healthy!
Sincerely,
Martin D. Cox, Ed.D.
