Superintendent's Rewind - February 27, 2019 - South Boys Advance to Class AA Basketball Finals
Posted by Martin Cox on 3/23/2020
During the School Closing due to the COVID-19 Health Crisis, Superintendent Dr. Martin D. Cox will seek to keep spirits high across the Clarkstown Central School District with his Superintendent's Rewind, a celebration of accomplishments by school community members in the past.
The weather outside the Westchester County Center was cold on the evening of February 27, 2019.
Inside the facility, however, the South High School Boys Basketball team found a hot streak at just the right time.
Led by Coach Matt Backs, South trailed Suffern High School in the Section I Class AA Semifinal contest 18-16 at halftime. The third and fourth quarters were tight, but Suffern went on a run to take a 7-point lead in the fourth quarter. Facing elimination, South battled back and tied the game at 38-38 when senior guard Jack Tucek stole the ball, drove downcourt, and made a left-handed layup with 1:01 remaining on the clock.
South then went ahead with under one minute to play when senior center Ryan Giordano made a free throw. Jack Tucek added two more free throws and teammate, senior Tony Hastings, also added two free throws in the final minute of play to cap a 7-0 South run that sealed a 43-38 win.
Jack Tucek led South in scoring that night with 19 points while Ryan Giordano added 16.
The win improved South's record to 18-5 and advanced them to the Section I Class AA Championship Game against Mount Vernon.
