Strawtown Elementary Creates Sugar Skulls in Honor of Hispanic Heritage Month

Kids making sugar skulls

Second graders at Strawtown Elementary School have been creating colorful sugar skulls in art class, as part of a project that ties into Dia de los Muertos and #HispanicHeritageMonth. They started with an outline, layered pieces of bright tissue paper on top, then carefully traced detailed designs over their work. A coat of Mod Podge gave each piece a glossy, finished look — and the results are just as vibrant and unique as the #ClarkstownCSD students themselves! Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated every year from September 15-October 15, our schools are finding meaningful ways to recognize and celebrate the diverse cultures, histories and contributions of Hispanic communities. In Dina Caprio’s art room, that has taken shape by learning about the traditions behind sugar skulls, with each grade level exploring the theme in ways that match their skills and creativity.
