• Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year at Strawtown Elementary School.  We look forward to working with you in providing a supportive, caring environment that will help develop self-esteem, self-motivation, and a sense of responsibility in all of our children.

    Students admitted            7:52 a.m.
    Classes begin                   8:00 a.m.
    Student late                    8:05 a.m.
    Classes dismissed             2:35 p.m.

Students arriving by car are to be dropped off at the side entrance to the building at the path entrance.  Unless children are participating in the Breakfast Program they may not be dropped off at school before 7:45 a.m.  Should this become necessary, please make other arrangements outside of school.  A staff member will be on duty on the path at 7:52 a.m. daily.  Please remember our Kiss and Go Policy.  Kiss your child at the car and send them into school.  Also, after the first few days of school, children should be able to estimate walking time to school in order to arrive no earlier than 7:45 a.m.  Children arriving at 7:45 a.m. should go directly to the cafeteria.  Please refrain from driving or stopping in front of the school between 7:30 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. as this area is reserved for bus drop-offs.

Since good attendance and punctuality are factors contributing to desirable achievements in school, you are urged to make every effort to have your child arrive promptly at school each day and to be in attendance daily except in cases of legal absence.  Children who are absent must bring a written note from home signed by the parent or guardian when they return to school.  This note must state the exact reason for the child’s absence and the date(s) of such absences.  Children who are late must bring a written note signed by the parent or guardian stating the reason for tardiness.  We are legally required to file all such statements.  Children are considered late if they enter the building after 8:05 am.

It is imperative that students arrive on time.  Class activities begin immediately, and students arriving late will miss many important academic activities.

If your child is absent please follow the Call-In procedures that are outlined on the Strawtown folder.  Please call the school nurse directly at 624-3473 and wait for the nurse prompt.

Breakfast will be served from 7:15 am to 7:45 am each morning in the cafeteria.  Students who wish to purchase breakfast may arrive by either car or regular bus.  No student will be admitted before 7:15 am.  Only students who are participating in the breakfast program may arrive before the 7:45 am arrival time.

All students are welcome to purchase breakfast, however, any student who does not exhibit proper behavior will not be allowed to participate in the program.

The health and safety of your child while they are being transported to and from school is of utmost importance to us.  In the interest of safety, all students will be given an assigned bus seat by their driver.  Your cooperation in the discussion of sound safety habits at bus stops and while riding the bus is sincerely requested.  In cases where children jeopardize safety rules, disciplinary action will be taken.  Children ride only on the bus to which they are assigned and must have a bus pass.  BUS CHILDREN MAY NOT TRANSFER FROM ONE BUS TO ANOTHER.  WALKERS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO RIDE THE SCHOOL BUS.

Students who travel by bus will be dismissed first at 2:27 p.m. followed by students who are walkers or who are picked up by car.  Since all buses will be arriving at one time in front of the school, the car pickup line will need to wait until all buses have left before moving to the front of the school.  All walkers, except those students who use the back entrance to walk home, and students going home by car will be dismissed to the front of the school.  Students riding home with parents other than their own will need a note from their parent or guardian.  These notes will be kept on file in the office.

Parents picking up students are asked to line up in the circle on the side of the school.  As you arrive, please pull all the way up to the car in front of you.  After buses leave, students being picked up will be led by teachers on duty to the concrete area directly in front of the school and will enter the appropriate car from the designated area.  In order to help ease congestion and for the safety of all children, we ask that you observe the following procedures:

    • As cars move into the “pick up area” (directly in front of the school’s entrance) teachers will assist students into cars.  Please do not call your child to enter your car from any other area.
    • When you arrive, move all the way up to the car in front of you.
    • Use only the curb side of the circle.
    • Please stay in your car.  Your child will come to you.
    • Please move carefully once your child/children are safely in the car.
    • Please do not block either entranceway to the side parking lot.
    • Do not park on the left side of the road in front of the school.

If, for compelling reasons, your child needs to be excused prior to dismissal time, a note is required.  All parents are required to sign their child out in the log kept in the main office whenever they pick their child up before dismissal time.  All such children will wait for their parent in the main office.  A child may only be signed out of school by the parent or legal guardian unless the parent requests otherwise in writing.  Please refrain from signing out your child between 2:15 – 2:35 p.m.
