August 2023
Dear Viking Families,
Welcome to the 2023-24 school year! Our staff is excited to welcome our students on their individual educational journeys with the goal of “preparing today’s students to conquer tomorrow’s challenges.”
A new school year provides the opportunity for a new beginning of our school routines and experiences. I encourage our students to establish academic goals for the school year, to become active in the school community through clubs and/or athletics, and to take advantage of the resources of Clarkstown South. These resources include the Homework Center, teachers’ extra help sessions, and a late bus for students who participate in clubs or extra help after school.
See below for more specific information concerning Back to School.
SCHEDULES
Student’s schedules will be posted on the district’s portal after 3 p.m. on August 24th. School Counselors are in school the week before school starts. If there are any questions or concerns, please email your child’s counselor. Your child’s counselor’s name is found on their schedule.
AFTER SCHOOL SUPERVISION
Students should only remain after school to attend extra help, extracurricular activities (i.e. clubs or sports), or the Homework Center (open Monday through Thursday). Students should not remain after school to play basketball or “hang out” outside of the school without a purpose. Therefore, the following will be the common practice in the 2023-24 school year.
- After 2:15 p.m., students who are waiting for a ride home should go to the lower lobby. If the ride does not arrive for a length of time, the child will wait in the library.
- Students who are waiting for a sport or activity to begin will go to the library to be supervised until the extracurricular activity begins.
- Once students complete extra help, club activities, etc. they will go to the library until the late bus comes. If a student is waiting for a ride, they may wait in the lower lobby by the security desk.
HOMEWORK CENTER
The Homework Center is available from 2-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and a late bus is available at 4 p.m. for those students who need transportation.
STUDENT PARKING
Students who choose to drive to school must have their parents complete the online parking form found HERE. Students who complete the form will be invited to a safety class provided by one of South’s Student Resource Officers. Once the form and class are completed, students should reach out to Security Officer Kukura to obtain a parking sticker. The cost of the sticker is $2.
ABSENCES
Students who are absent from school must provide a note or email with a legal excuse in order to be marked legally absent. Emails can be sent to South’s Attendance Office at SATO@ccsd.edu. Physical notes should be brought to the main office.
DAILY SCHEDULE
Classes begin at 7:25 a.m. and end at 2:00 p.m. The bell schedule is below:

MEETINGS
During the first week of school, the administration of South will be meeting with seniors, juniors and sophomores to share information about safety protocols and educational and emotional support systems available to our students. This information will be included in the Freshmen Orientation scheduled for this Monday, August 28th at 10 a.m. The other class meetings will take place as follows:
Seniors - September 5, 7:25 a.m in the auditorium
Sophomores and Juniors - September 6, 8:14 a.m. in the auditorium
LAPTOPS AND COMPUTER USAGE
Students returning to Clarkstown South have been issued a laptop for use throughout their four years of high school. Students are expected to bring their laptops to school every day with a full charge. Freshmen students or those students who are new to Clarkstown South must complete the following form: CCSD Technology Loaner Program
Students who did not pick up their laptop at Freshman Orientation should pick up their laptop in the library during the first week of school. Returning students who are taking specific classes* that require additional programs on their laptops should see Ms. Foiles in the library.
[*Courses that require additional program installation are: AP Computer Science-Java, Architectural Drawing, Build It, College Computer Programming Honors, Drawing & Design for Production, Engineering,]
GETTING INVOLVED
As we work to provide the best possible education for our students, we also look forward to having your support. To be most effective, it is essential that we work together as a team; therefore, I hope that our families will be involved with the South community by joining our PTSA and get involved with school committees or activities.
We look forward to welcoming all Vikings on September 5, 2023.
Sincerely,
Debra Tarantino, Principal
