  • 19th Annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Festival on Saturday, February 20, 2021 from 08:00am to 4:00 pm.

    Alfred Street Baptist Church is hosting the 19th Annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Festival on Saturday, February 20, 2021. This Festival will be VIRTUAL.  

    This festival is not just for high school seniors.  All high school students who are considering/planning to attend an HBCU college or university should plan to attend.  It is never too soon to prepare for college.

  • MLK ORATORY CONTEST  

    Nyack Center will have their Annual Black History Celebration on Saturday, February 6, 2021.  Due to the pandemic, this year’s event will be virtual.  The Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratory Contest, which has been part of Nyack Center’s Black History Month Celebration for the past few years, will take place in two phases this year:  Phase 1 - submit by January 25, 2021 a videotaped speech for preliminary judging and to determine the three (3) Finalists; Phase 2 - The three (3) Finalists will submit by January 31st an updated second video to determine the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Scholarship Awards.

    Students, ages 13- 20, who wish to compete in this county-wide contest must prepare and upload a video of themselves delivering a 3–5-minute segment of a speech, letter or sermon by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. or other orators who speak about the African American Experience (the presentations may be read or recited from memory). Speeches will be judged on content, comprehension of the material, interpretation, ability to stay within the allotted time frame, overall presentation and delivery.

  • Write on, NY! is a statewide writing initiative that promotes student writing and the Lifelong Practices of Writers. 
     
    To promote this new resource, the Education Department is hosting a Write on, NY! Logo Design Contest. The contest is open to all New York State students in prekindergarten through grade 12 who love to design and love to write! The deadline for entries is February 28, 2021. Winning logo designs will be announced in March 2021.

  • American Pool will be introducing a new info sessions/open house format through May! They are still living in a virtual world and will continue to offer applicant open houses (on select Saturdays) and hired guard info sessions (on select Thursday afternoons).

    Lifeguarding is a wonderful way to spend a summer break, it gives a person valuable life skills including certified lifeguard training, customer relations, and communication.

  • Columbia Engineering Summer High School Academic Program for Engineers (SHAPE) is a selective summer high school program for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors. SHAPE is geared toward local students who have demonstrated an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Each 3-week session offers college-level courses in engineering, which are complemented by electives and workshops.

    SHAPE was fortunate to have a successful virtual program in 2020 and while they are hopeful for an in-person component this year, they look forward to offering SHAPE safely, however possible in 2021. This will include collaborative work with other students, Columbia undergraduates, and professors as well as hands-on project-based work.

  • High School Seniors Sought for National Youth Science Camp

    Applications are now being accepted from high school seniors in the class of 2021 to represent New York State at the 2021 National Youth Science Camp (NYSCamp). Two students from each state, Washington, D.C, and 8 countries will attend the all-expenses-paid VIRTUAL program which is held from June 28 through July 21, 2021.
     
    The National Youth Science Camp is a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) opportunity. The camp will provide daily lectures and seminars with leading scientists, directed studies alongside visiting and resident STEM professionals, and engaging outdoor activities.
     
    Applications must be submitted online at the National Youth Science Camp website by February 28, 2021.

  • Lamont Doherty Next Gen Summer Program

    The Next Generation of Hudson River Educators Using Place-Based Education to Connect under-represented Minorities to their Local Waterways

    6 week paid summer internship where students will conduct research and field investigations learning from the Hudson River and then creating educational resources to teach their peers, families, and communities about the importance of our Hudson watershed.
