Process

How am I going to do this? The Big6 will give you a way of thinking about your information problem.

Step 1:  Define the task. Your teacher has done this for you in the TASK section of this WebQuest.

Step 2:  Where am I going to find the information? Your teacher and librarian have given you a good headstart. Look at the RESOURCES section of this WebQuest.

Step 3:  Locate and Access. Your work begins here. If you are using books, you will need to find them in a library catalog. Once you have the book, you will have to use your detective skills to find the information within the book. Remember: You might not find a whole book about your tribe, but you might find just what you need in a paragraph in a book. The Index and the Table of Contents are wonderful starting places.  If you are using our research databases, you will need to find the keywords that will bring up the information you need. As you use the Web sites, you will have to scan a lot of information that you don't want, to find things that you do.

Step 4:  Use the Information. You will need to take notes. You will need to include some information on your slides. You will also need to have some way of remembering what you want to say in your oral presentation that will go along with the slides. Your teacher will show you some of the possibilities.

Step 5:  Put the Information Together to Show What You Have Learned. Your teacher has a specific way she wants your project organized. She outlined this for in the TASK section of this WebQuest.

Step 6:  Evaluation. Your teacher will evaluate how well you completed your job by using the rubric in the EVALUATION section of this WebQuest. However, a good researcher thinks about a project a little differently than the teacher. You should be interested not only in the outcome but the process. Think about what you did. What did you like? What would you do differently next time? Maybe you did not like how you took notes so next time you will try a different method. Maybe you found you wasted a lot of time using Web sites so next time you will concentrate on books. Maybe you did not like working in a group or making a PowerPoint. As you get older, you will have more choice in the projects you do. If you think carefully about how you work best now, you will be ready to take more responsibility next time.
