This assignment is divided into categories. All students will do at least one project from Group A. Most students will do at least one project from Group B. Some students will choose projects from Group C. In May, we will prepare a display for the New City Library Children's Room of your work. In June, we will have a display at the Woodglen International Fair.
Group A.

Using Excel, construct a graph to represent the data in Mr. Smith's book: If all the world were a village.

Group B

Pick one of the topics in the book to explore further. Show what you have learned. This could take numerous forms - limited only by your imagination. The following list is not what you have to do; it's just to get you started thinking.

  • For instance, you could write a paragraph about one of the  world's religions (major beliefs, practices, etc.) and find a picture to illustrate.
  • You could find a picture of a child carrying water and write a paragraph explaining the difficulties a family faces when near-by water is not available.
  • You could make a poster comparing schools in developed and undeveloped countries.
  • You could make a poster with "hello" in hundreds of languages.
  • Make a poster about world hunger.
  • Make a list of the areas in the world where air pollution is a serious problem or find pictures.
  • Draw a tree outline. Label the trunk with the chosen issue, the roots with the causes of an issue, the branches with the effects of the issue, and the fruit with possible solutions to the issue.
Group C

Take one of the concepts in the book and illustrate it in three-dimensional form. For instance: money in the village. I want to make a display in which 1 penny = 1 dollar. If we gather rolls of pennies, it will take 180 rolls of pennies to represent the 20 richest people in the village. It will take 7 rolls and 10 loose pennies to represent the 20 poorest. That is a big visual difference.

Choose an organization to which we can donate the above money. Make a persuasive speech to the class as to why we should pick your choice.
