Process

These are the bones of those searchers lost in the process of trying to find their way on the Web. Don't be one them. Learn your lessons well.

This page tells you how you are going to accomplish your task. You should have answered the first two questions. There are seven more to go. The instructions for finding the answers to the next five are in the paragraphs below. Since this is a long page, I have put some BOOKMARKS in it to help you stay on track. BOOKMARKS are navigation bars (or hyperlinks - we're going to talk about them next) that take you to places on the same page. So far we have used navigation bars to take us to new pages, but - unlike books - Web pages can be any length. In the same site, some pages can be short and some can be very long. This will be a long page, so I will divide it with Numbers and Subtitles and put BOOKMARKS so that you can click up or down to any question on this page. Practice it now. Pick a number, go there, then come back to Question 3. (Helpful hint: At the end of every question, there is a navigation bar.)

Question 3

We have practiced using the scroll bar. Now we are going to learn three other ways to do the same thing. Look to the right of the main keyboard. Near the space bar, you will see arrows. You can use these as weapons to attack the Knight of Confusion. Click on the Up and Down arrows and they will take you up and down the page. Above the arrows, you will see keys that say "Home, Page Up, End, Page Down."  Look at your Mouse. If  it has a center wheel, you can roll it up and down and move the page. Try them all. Answer question three.

Question 4

Congratulations! You know how to find information hidden way down in a page. But it can also hide outside the right margin of your screen. Just as Web pages can be any length. They also can be any width. We have been on fairly easy terrain. Now it will get a bit tricky. When words go off the right edge, you have to follow by using the Arrow Keys or the scroll bar (if you have one) at the bottom of your screen. (The horizontal scroll bar works just like the other one except that it goes right and left.) Read the riddle below. The answer to question 4 is way out on the right edge.

Twelve pears hanging high. Twelve knights passing by. Each took a pear and left eleven hanging there? How can this be? "Each" was the name of one of the knights.

Question 5

A knight must be very observant. You never know where danger is lurking. Have you noticed that the words in the Navigation Bars are underlined and in a different color from the rest of the text? Have you noticed how they change color when you click on them?  Or that the mouse pointer changes from a cursor to a hand as if you can "touch" the words?  These are called HYPERLINKS. If you click on a HYPERLINK, it will take you someplace else. So far you have only used these in the Navigation Bars and Bookmarks, and they have only taken you safely around these pages. Are you ready to try something harder? Find the hyperlink in the next paragraph. Record its color.

Do not click on it  until you know how to get back here. Remember, you are at the controls. I cannot come and find you. The Knight of Confusion may try to use this task to separate us, but read carefully and you will outsmart him. To come back you will have to click on the BACK ARROW at the very top of your screen. Look up there now. Do you see the arrows "Back" and "Forward"? Before you leave me, try them. Click on the Back Arrow and then the Forward Arrow. Then meet me back here in Question 5. Try it now. Did it work? Great! Now you know that you can come back to any page that you visited earlier in an Internet session using the BACK ARROW on your Browser toolbar.  I have done everything I can for you. Now you are ready to undertake the most dangerous mission yet. Take a look at a dragon .  Make a sketch of it in the box on your paper and come back here immediately!

Question 6

You made it! You're over half-way there. In this next challenge, you will examine the beast more closely. Up to now, we have used words or numbers as hyperlinks to take us to places, but images (or pictures) can be used in the same way. They are called IMAGEMAPS. The web master creates HOT SPOTS on the picture and, if you click on one, it will take you someplace. You know you have found a HOT SPOT when you put your cursor over the picture and you see a shape, or the name of the linked site appears and the cursor turns into a hand. I am going to send you back to the dragon. This time run your cursor over it. When you see the shapes, click. Read the new information and answer questions in Area 6 on the Percy Quest sheet.  Remember to get back here, use your Back Arrow (hint: it could take a lot of clicks). While you are examining the dragon, you can use the Back Arrow or look for the gold hyperlink "Back".  Go now and be careful!

Question 7

Our time is running out. I am due back at the castle by nightfall, and there is one very important lesson left. We need more information than your sheet can hold. In a minute, I want you to open up a Word document.

Once Word is open, you won't be able to see this page anymore, but I haven't gone far. The Internet is open on the toolbar; just click on the icon and this page will pop open again. Then Word will be down on the toolbar. It's kind of like a see saw. Let's try it. Open a Word document. (There are three ways to do that: You can minimize this page [with the "minus" button at the top] and open Word from the desktop icon. You can go to programs and open Word there. Or you can open Word from the icon on the toolbar.) At the top, type in your name and class. Then open this page again. Jump back and forth a few times just to get the feel of it. But remember, the Knight of Confusion does not rest, and always traps a few at this stage. Do not let it be you.

Question 8

Shhhh! The Knight of Confusion is nearly upon us, but I

think there is a way to trick him. We must open a window
and hide behind the first rock we find. No! Not that kind
of window. Let me explain.

When you were looking at the dragon, the hyperlinks brought you to new pages replacing the ones that were on your screen. You had to use the Back Button to get back here, remember? But a WebMaster does not have to create a whole new page for information; he or she can create a new WINDOW and put the information there.

When you are working with WINDOWS you have to know about the three boxes in the right upper corner of your screen. Look up there now. The "X" closes the window. The middle box makes the window bigger or smaller. The minus sign minimizes the window (makes it disappear) and puts it on the toolbar.

When you open a WINDOW, it might open smaller than your screen. To make it fill the whole screen, you have to click on the middle button in the upper right hand corner. To make it just a little bigger, click on a corner, hold down the mouse, and pull. Sometimes a WINDOW fills the whole screen. The only way that you know it is a WINDOW and not a whole new page is by looking at the Back Arrow. If the Back Arrow is grey and doesn't work, you know you are in a WINDOW. To get back here, close the window by clicking on the X in the right corner. In just a minute, we are going to open a WINDOW and you can experiment, but first put on your earphones. I think we can hear our enemy. Let's go. And remember hide behind the nearest rock. (Clicking on the hyperlink will open the window.

Question 9

You have escaped Confusion. You have proven yourself ready to undertake our King's most secret mission. We have heard rumors of a very strange beast on the edges of our kingdom. The King wants you to go to where these creatures were last sighted, find the truth, and bring back pictures so that he can judge the danger for himself. I will tell you all I know, but I have not gone there myself so you will have to make decisions on your own. I will get you to the Land in a new window. But, once at that page, there are many places to explore. When you are exploring, use your Back Arrow. When you have collected all your information and are ready to return here, close the window.

To complete this mission, you must know how to copy words and pictures from the Internet and paste them in a Word document. When you are working with pictures, remember to get the largest image possible. Sometimes WebMasters put little pictures (thumbnails) on the page so that it will load faster. If you click on the picture, sometimes it will get larger. Always try that first. Now about copying and pasting:  It is simple, but it might take you more than one try. For a picture: put the cursor, on the picture. Right click (that's the side you do not use very often). A menu will pop open. This is where you might have to try more than once. Do not panic, just keep trying. It will open.  You will see a list of things you can do, click on COPY. Then look on your tool bar for your Word document, Right click again, and this time choose PASTE.  If you do not have a Word document open, open one now. Then come back to this page.  Next Right click on my picture, copy and paste it into Word and come back.

Great! To copy words: highlight the words by holding down the mouse and dragging across them. Next put the cursor over the highlighting and Right click. The menu will come up, click Copy, go to Word, and Paste.  Let's practice. Copy and paste the sentence:

Percy is sooooooo cute!

The last thing you must know: You are the advance scout. Depending on what you find out, the king might send out troops. You must record addresses so others will know where to go. Look at the top of this page. Do you see the white address bar? Put the cursor anywhere in that space and click. It will highlight the address. I bet you know what to do next (right click, copy, and paste the address in the Word document). Under my picture and description, put the address. The address of a Web page is called a URL.

Now for your exact assignment:

Using the hyperlink below, in the Word document that you have open, put the following information:

1. Your name and class (if it is not there already)

2. 2 pictures of komodo dragons and at least two facts. These facts could be anything ( for example: what they eat, how big they grow, where they live) - whatever you think is important for the King to know.

3. The exact URL or Web address of the page from which the information was taken. Put the URL (Web address) under the picture or the information.

You are ready to leave me. Remember the new land will open in its own window so you will have to close it in the upper corner when you are ready to come back. Good luck on your journey!

You are back! Let's see how you did. On the navigation bar below, click on Evaluation.
