A Pathfinder for Collecting Information about New York State

The most comprehensive site is the New York State site. Probably everything you need is here someplace, but where is the question. Look at the navigation box on the left. Visiting New York is a good place to start. When you click on that, you will see lots of places you could go. "I Love New York" and the "Maps" are good. However, this site does not divide the state according to the land regions that your text does so I have created the map above. Looking at the topographic map of New York might also help. There is also a map for precipitation (if the map is too small, click below Long Island and an orange box will eventually appear, click on it and the map gets readable). The maps are from the World Atlas which has other items you might find useful.

Another excellent place to look: our research databases, EBSCO and INFOTRAC. I played with these and found excellent material using EBSCO's Searchasaurus and BookSource. I searched on New York State as well as city names.

Another source that would be a good starting place is Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia. The search box is on the left. You won't be able to find your region, but look up the cities and towns in your region. Even small villages are there.

To find the average temperature, snow, and precipitation in your region, the Weather Underground provides charts of the yearly averages. Choose a major city in your region. Put the name, comma, New York (example: Ithaca, New York) in the box in the upper corner. The page that comes up shows you the current weather. Scroll down the page until you see the information about the moon. Just above where it says "Astronomy," you will see "Seasonal Weather Averages." This will give you graphs for your area.

ClassBrain.com is set up for people doing a report about the whole state. However, you might find some interesting things about your region. It has such things, for instance, as a list of National Parks in New York, a list of the top agricultural products of the state and (a ways down that page) the top agricultural counties, etc.

Westport is not a major town of the region in size, but one of the ferries to Vermont leaves from here. Links off this page have pictures of the region.
