PHYSICAL EDUCATION ORIENTEERING WEBQUEST

INTRODUCTION

There are several ways for a person to maintain personal health and wellness. It is believed that physical activity can extend a person’s lifespan. Human beings rest better after exercise and have more stamina to meet the everyday demands of life. The regular responsibilities of family and work can far outweigh what a person can handle if they do not exercise routinely.

The demands of orienteering are physical and intellectual. It requires cardiovascular endurance and an ability to perform map and compass reading.

Review the pictures and diagrams below, familiarize yourself with them and prepare a written description of what each is used for. I have also given you a verse to figure out what direction you are headed in during the day. Try to memorize it.

WHERE AM I

If I walk to the sun, I am headed east or west
Walking left or right, will give me the rest.

Walk to the sun early, and south is on my right
Walk the same place later, and north comes at night.

CONCLUSION

Students should develop an appreciation for alternative means of exercising. If done properly, students will attempt to complete the course in as short amount of time as possible. Most competitors will run between markers. Pushing their heart rate into and pass the target zone. There are several other forms of non-conventional means to exercise and students should familiarize their selves with as many forms a as possible. Activities that take less toll on the body as a person gets older can be very beneficial to increasing muscular and cardiovascular strength and endurance.

TEACHER'S PAGE

Introduction - Figure out all of the days the computer lab will be needed and schedule it as soon as possible. It is required for the first lesson. An extra day or two may be needed to scheduled in case of any overlapping class assignments.
Task
Resources - Teachers should feel free to add, change or eliminate the list of resources.
Process - Unless the class is very small, there is not enough time for each student to individually complete all of the tasks. I found small groups work best. There should always be a recorder, compass reader and a person in charge of the controllers. That could mean drawing them, hanging them or reading the clues from them. No less than three and no more than five seemed to work best.
Conclusion - Students should learn there are several alternatives to maintaining health and wellness without participating in traditional physical education.
Evaluation - A total of 24 points can be accumulated. Students should be required to earn 15 points in order to pass.
