Unit 2: Minerals, Rocks and Resources

Define Mineral:

Define Rock:

Properties for mineral ID:
  • Crystal shape, hardness, color, cleavage, and density of a mineral are determined by the arrangements of the atoms or ions of that mineral.
  • Streak, cleavage, fracture, hardness, and luster of a mineral are the easiest ways to identify a mineral and can be performed by simple tests.

MOH's Scale for testing HARDNESS

Silicate (Si and O) minerals make up over 90% of the Earth's Crust.

Earth's Internal Structure (reference table) Bowen's Reaction Series: last to form, last to weather

Rock Classification: rocks are classified based on the way in which they form!
