Summer Reading List

2008

Reading good books broadens one's outlook, stimulates imagination, increases vocabulary and provides quiet entertainment which is a refreshing contrast to the over-stimulation of modern life.

Over the summer each student MUST read  two books total.  One must be from the appropriate list and one may be a book of choice. The appropriate list is the one that reflects the course(s) the student will be taking in September. The book of choice should be age and/or grade appropriate and cannot be a work that is read as part of the regular curriculum at South High School.

Parents should review the list to help select books that are mutually acceptable to them and their children. The English department includes a rating guide at the end of each description numbered 1 to 3 to help parents guide their children's choices.  The guide is as follows:
                                                1 - Grade Level
                                                2 - Moderately Challenging
                                                3 - Challenging

In addition, books that contain graphic material or address mature issues are denoted with an asterisk.  We encourage parents to share their love of reading and by joining their child.

It is recommended that students take notes while reading these books to facilitate the evaluation process in the fall. A sample note taking sheet is provided through a link on this page. All students will be responsible by the end of September for demonstrating an understanding of at least one book they have read.

All lists are for your 2008-2009 school year grade level
