Celebrate National Poetry Month

What better place to start appreciating National Poetry Month but the North Library Media Center where you can find print and non-print resources.

Poetry can be found in the 800 section of the North Media Center.  Make sure to check out the Poetry for Students Series.  Each volume of Poetry for Students provides analysis of approximately 20 poems that teachers and librarians have identified as the most frequently studied in literature courses.  Interested in using an electronic resource?  Try ProQuest Learning: Literature an internet based database that combines biographies, reference books, journal articles, revision guides, images, video clips, sound clips, interactivities and web links.  Access is available from school and home.  Come into the library to obtain a home access code.

Poets.org is an award winning website containing thousands of poems as well as hundreds of poet biographies, essays, interviews, and poetry recordings.  Poets.org is a program of the Academy of American Poets, a nonprofit organization founded in 1934. 

Infoplease celebrates National Poetry Month by compiling special features such as:  poetry collections of famous poets, poets on poetry, poetry awards, etc.  Infoplease also offers Quizzes & Crosswords & Fun! Enjoy activities such as poetry terms hangman and poetry crosswords

Sticky Notes V will be held February 13th in the Library.  This event is sponsored by student writers of Clarkstown North and the North English Department.  Students from  North and Pearl  River will participate.  Students will enjoy a day of creative poetry workshops entitled -- Slam Poetry: Poetry of the Spoken Word,  Enjambment:  The Art         of Not Ending Sentences, Expressionism: Using Dialogue in Poetry.  The day of   inspirational workshops will conclude with a Chat-Revision-Open Mike Sign up and       Mini Java Jive.  At this time students will be given the opportunity to share their work.  

 

The 24th Annual Rockland Read-In, sponsored by the Rockland BOCES School Library System, will take place February 12th. All students in Rockland County will be encouraged to spend the day sustained silent reading for pleasure.    Students are welcome to enjoy the Read-In at the North Library Media Center during their study hall and lunch periods.   All participants can enter a drawing at the circulation desk in the library from periods 1- 8.  The winners of the drawing will be announced during the afternoon announcements.

Did you know that you can search/retrieve books from school libraries all over Rockland County?  In addition, the  Rockland County Union Catalog now allows North Library patrons to search our library holdings from home.  Here’s how…..

Searching the Union Catalog:

bullet Go to the http://rcb.scoolaid.net/bin/home
bullet Enter your search term in the box.  Select “search filter” located to the right of the word search.
bullet Select the District you wish to search using the drop down arrow.
bullet Select the Building by using the drop down arrow.
bullet Select “all”  if you wish to search all buildings in that district.
bullet To select all of the libraries in the county select (SLS) School Library System.

Come into the North Library to interlibrary loan materials from county or district libraries.  A username and password is required.

Gale Cengage Learning: Health and Wellness Resource Center has a new and updated interface. For more information, view the guided tour of the database.  Access to this resource is available from school or home and is provided by .  The home access password is available in the Library Media Center. 

 

Don't forget about MyDropBox!!!

MyDropBox integrates  plagiarism prevention technology in a digital learning environment.  This online plagiarism prevention program allows students to submit assignments in order to detect the percentage of plagiarism and the source from which the information came from.  This is truly a wonderful teaching tool.  Teachers should visit the Library Media Center to set up an instructor account.

   Freshman Library Orientation will begin on Monday, September 17th.  Students will be visiting the library during their English class to become familiar with the facility and learn what is available at library. (9.17 - 9.19)
