Volcano Experiment
A Volcanic Eruption
Make a model of a volcano, simulate and eruption, and discover some things about how volcanic action affects both the earth and people.
What You’ll Need:
· modeling clay
· construction paper
· baking soda
· vinegar
· food coloring
· 2 small paper cups
· Wooden toothpicks
· Glue
· Response Sheet A
What to Do
1.
Mold a cone-shaped volcano out of
clay. Make the volcano large enough for a small paper cup to fit inside its
central vent. Then, pull the paper cup into the vent. Place the volcano on a
piece of construction paper.
2.
Build a town near the volcano.
Create houses, people, and objects out of different color clay, construction
paper and toothpicks.
3. Drop 30 ml (2 tablespoons) of baking soda into the central vent. Add several drops of food coloring. Pour 125 ml (1/2 cup) of vinegar into the mixture. You will see a chemical take place between the vinegar and the baking soda. Use the Response Sheet to record your observations.
