WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS OF A BAKER KEYHOLE ESSAY?

The students’ final product will have an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement. This will be followed by two to three supporting paragraphs with topic sentences, relevant details and examples, and smooth transitions. A conclusion that restates the thesis and summarizes the details will complete their report.

A Baker Keyhole Essay consists of 4 - 5 paragraphs.

Introduction - First paragraph
The introduction should grab the reader's interest and inform the reader about the purpose of the essay .  

a)  General statement about the topic (A question or a quote is a good beginning).
b)  Expand on the first sentence.
c)  Thesis statement tells the main idea of the report. It states the purpose of your  essay (Last sentence in paragraph).

Body - Second, third, and fourth paragraphs

a)  Topic sentence - explains what the paragraph is about.
b)  Support the main idea of the essay with details and examples.
c)  Transition sentence- word or phrase that eases the reader's path from paragraph to paragraph.

Conclusion - Last paragraph
a)  First sentence restates main idea of paper (purpose of essay). Repeat last sentence from introductory paragraph.
b)  Summarize your details and examples you wrote about in body.
c)  General statement about your essay.
