PROCESS

Brainstorm as a class to determine essential questions that need to be answered in writing a newspaper article about the Treason Story. Distribute the research notes and explain that the questions should be answered as they find the information. Note: Many students feel they must look for each answer in order. Prior to this section review the Big6 research process.

1.       Using yahoo (www.yahoo.com), search these topics to answer the questions about A Story of Treason on your Research Notes.  Use quotes and/or the Boolean "and" or + when entering your keyword search statement in Yahoo. A lesson about online search strategies should precede this section. Yahoo Search Tips. (NOTE: Search tips are different in each search engine. Read search tips before starting your search.) Model and explain that keywords can be link with "and" to narrow their search.

       Examples: "John Andre" and trial
                  +"John Andre" +trial (In Yahoo)

First, let students attempt to find their own resources using these strategies. Introduce them to the resources section only after they are confident in applying the online search strategies taught.

Major John Andre            Benedict Arnold

Joshua Hett Smith            George Washington

Fort at West Point             Old '76 House

DeWint House                    Old Dutch Church Tappan
                More

2.     Search yahoo for primary sources (letters, journals, diaries, newspaper articles, speeches, photographs, etc.) about this event and copy/paste them on your research notes. Use quotes from these sources in your article. Discuss the meaning of primary sources and their importance in getting accurate information about events in history.

3.     Open a Word document, type your name and A Story of Treason as your heading. Save your Word document under your user name on the H-Drive. Give the document the file name Treason Story. When you locate a photograph of the people and places involved, right click, copy and paste it into your document. Make sure to label each picture and give credit to the site from which you copied the picture. Prior to this section, students should know how to use Microsoft Word, copy and paste photographs, cite the source, name and save a file on their H-Drive.

4.     Using your Research Notes and your photographs, design a front page headline for the Pennsylvania Gazette during the Revolutionary Period about the Treason Story. Write a newspaper article describing the events of this spy plot. Give your article a catchy title. Be sure to include What happened? Who was involved? Where? When? Why? and How? Try to quote one of your primary sources. Several articles will be selected and included on Link's web page. Sample Newspapers from the Past.
A lesson on how to write a newspaper article should precede this section. Use the writing process, the Formula for a Well-Written News Article and "Writers Express: A Handbook for Young Writers, Thinkers, and Learners" by Dave Kemper, Ruth Nathan, and Patrick Sebranek ( D.C. Heath and Company) as a guide.
