Kindergarten,
the students are introduced to the computer and its basic parts (monitor,
keyboard, mouse, printer), use appropriate technology terminology, respect the
computer as a valuable tool, access network software programs, draw and paint
electronically (Kid Pix Studio, Kidspiration for example) and select and use
these materials appropriately.
Grade
1
students develop basic computer skills such as cursor control and keying in
words and sentences, use of space bar, shift and delete keys, beginning
experimenting with choices (fonts, graphics, etc.) found in such programs as
Microsoft Word and using more advanced software such as Millie’s Math House
and Math Zoo Zillions.
Grade
2
students develop other skills such as key in sentences and paragraphs, write
stories (such as found in Storybook Weaver) and simple reports and participate
in grade level appropriate simulations.
Grade 3 students participate in formal keyboarding training (such as Type To Learn), explore sources of electronic research and apply to subject (software such as Golden Book Encyclopedia, Atlas, Eyewitness Encyclopedia of Nature)
Grade 4 students continue formal keyboarding skills, use the computer to do creative writing in a variety of genre (letters, poetry, journal writing) such as found in Microsoft Publisher, use telecommunications to answer content related questions with teacher guidance and further skills of software such as Winnebago Spectrum Catalog, and electronic research on the Internet.
Grade 5 students have an opportunity to create their own PowerPoint presentations. These skills develop a sense of how to do page layout and design. The students also are very involved in research using the Internet as well as writing, editing and publishing pieces of their own writing.
