More on Van Gogh, the artist of "Starry Night" - great sites for kids!

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter. Although today he is highly regarded, during his lifetime he received little recognition and only sold one painting. His sunflower series may be his most popular work, but he was prolific, completing more than 800 paintings in ten years.

How van Gogh Made His Mark - an interactive site from the Metropolitan Museum - here you can compare his drawings to the paintings and learn about his life and art - GREAT SITE

National Gallery of Art: Van Gogh
****
The National Gallery of Arts' Van Gogh's Van Goghs exhibit closed in 1999. But through the magic of the Internet, you can still see it. The virtual museum tour comes in the two flavors. If you have a high-speed connection, I recommend the QuickTime VR version. Either way, the exhibit features seventy-two paintings, and audio commentary. View the brochure for a van Gogh bio and timeline.

Van Gogh and Gauguin: The Studio of the South
****
"Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh, celebrated today for their profound impact on the history of modern painting, were both relative latecomers to art. By the time they met in the autumn of 1887, both men were well into their thirties (Gauguin 39, van Gogh 34), and each had several failed careers behind him." In 1888, the two artists lived and worked together for several months in a yellow house in Arles, France. Explore the work they did before, during, and after their time together in the Studio of the South.

Next year is the 400th anniversary of Rembrandt's birth on July 15, 1606. Because Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn is revered as Holland's greatest and most prolific baroque artist, Dutch museums are already starting to celebrate. Rembrandt is credited with 600 paintings, 300 etchings and 1400 drawings. Although experts argue that some of these were actually done by Rembrandt's apprentices, that's still a lot of art.

Artchive: One Man Show: Rembrandt
Mark Harden's Artchive exhibits "seven of the master's greatest works in a virtual gallery setting. Be sure to zoom in for the level of detail required for a true appreciation of these masterpieces." A simple and intuitive interface makes this gallery a delight. While you're here, be sure to mouse around the other galleries (especially The Sculpture Garden, Goya, and The First Impressionist Exhibition, 1874) and Juxtapositions (a collection of art critiques and additional exhibits.)

Rembrandt House Museum
I didn't find the virtual room-by-room museum tour very compelling, but fortunately I checked out the Rembrandt section before I left, because it's a winner. To enter, click on the olive green Rembrandt icon in the horizontal menu header. You'll be rewarded with an interactive Rembrandt time line, annotated tour of famous works, and a FAQ that will lead you to a kids section (click on the school link in the first answer.) Although the kids section opens with an error, you can still visit the Rembrandt quiz and three interactive games.
