Step 1. Observation
Look at the pictures below.  Read the captions.  Don't worry about words you don't understand.  Just skip them and try to get the general meaning each item.  When you click on a picture, it will appear in another window.  You can enlarge that window for a closer look, but don't close this window, or you will lose your answers.

Step 2. Inference
In this step, you look for facts you can  infer   from  documents just by looking at them.

1.  Where and when was  photograph #1 taken?

2.  What is the man in photograph #1 doing?

3.  What is the date of  the photograph #2 and where was it taken?

4.  Why is the rainforest burning in photo #2?

5.  What is the date of  photograph #3 and where was it made?

6.  What is the building in photograph #3  and what is it used for?

Step 3. Questions for higher level thinking.
In this step, you use knowledge you already have and things you know from the  documents to reach conclusions or ask questions.

7.  In your own words, describe the changes occurring in these rainforests. Are these changes for the better or for the worse?

8.  The word "ecotourism" means to take vacations in natural places such as rainforests in a manner meant to minimize harmful impact on the plants and animals living there (see Photo #3).  Could ecotourists who visit and spend money in the rainforest  help the man in photo #1 and the forest in photo #2? How?
