Japanese Speech Contest
Eleventh grader, Cassandra G. from
Clarkstown South, was selected the

Japanese Speech Contest at the
United Nations International School

North Students Win Awards at
Foreign Language Poetry Recitation
Contest
On May 22, ten North High School
students participated in the Foreign
Language Poetry Recitation Contest
at the William Paterson University
in Wayne, NJ. There were over five
hundreds students from NJ and NY.
Twelfth-grader, Keika Jones, won the
honorary prize (4th) for the Native
Japanese Level, and ninth-grader,
Sophia Chawala, won the 3rd prize
for the Intermediate Japanese Level.

Six Clarkstown Teachers
Awarded Adaptor Grants
Six Clarkstown teachers have been awarded “Adaptor Grants”
from WESTCHESTER/ROCKLAND IMPACT II Program. These teachers
have been selected to receive a certificate and a $300
developer grant to adapt and replicate existing programs.

Clarkstown South
Four scholarships, each in the
amount of $250, have been awarded to
Clarkstown South seniors. The four
winning seniors will be invited to
the West Nyack Elementary Moving Up
Ceremony on Monday, June 23, 2008 to
be recognized and awarded the
scholarships.

Bardonia 5th Grader Wins Multiple
Swimming Medals
Nicola, a fifth grade student at
Bardonia, won eight medals at the
Eastern Zone Swimming Championship
held at Erie Community College,
Buffalo, early in April.

South Teachers Awarded IMPACT
II Developer Grants
South mathematics teachers Mary
Creagh, Mary Ann Gavioli and
Stephanie Ludwig have been awarded
IMPACT II Developer grants for
innovative projects implemented in
the teaching and learning of
mathematics and will be honored at
an Awards Ceremony on May 29, 2008
at the Southern Westchester BOCES.
South Students Win First
Place Medals at Math League
Competition
Emil G. and Andre K. from South High
School were awarded first place
medals for their individual
performances on the Rockland Team A
at the New York State Mathematics
League state-wide competition in
Rochester.
South Students Advance to
Semi-Finals in 2008 Moody’s
Challenge
A South High School team of Andre
K., Emil G. and Michele P. has
advanced to the semi-finals in the
2008 MOODY's CHALLENGE competition.
More than 250 teams of high school
students submitted a solution paper
to a real-world problem with 56
teams advancing to the next level of
review.
South Students Participate in
2008 Greater New York Metropolitan
Math Fair
Seven South students were selected
to compete in the 2008 Greater New
York Metropolitan Math Fair at
Brooklyn Polytech: Stephen B., Emily
B., Naji F., Chirag J., Allison K.,
Allegra K. and Katharine Z.. Naji F.
and Chirag J. advanced to Round Two
where they were awarded bronze and
silver medals respectively.
South Students Excel in Math
Competition
Clarkstown South earned third place
in Region IV of the LOG 1 contest
sponsored by the National Mu Alpha
Theta (Math Honor Society). Emil G.,
Andre K., Andrew P., Michele P. were
awarded 3rd, 12th, 17th, 18th places
respectively in the Mu Division of
the national competition.

South Student Places First in
Regional IV Math Contest
South student, Steven M., was the
first place scorer in the Regional
IV Contest sponsored by the National
Mu Alpha Theta and has been awarded
a paid registration to the National
Mu Alpha Theta Convention in
Sacramento, California in July 2008.
South Math Publications Hit Gold
Eureka 2007 and Mad About Mu, two
South High School math publications,
were awarded GOLD MEDALS in the
annual Columbia Scholastic Press
critique competition.
South Graduate is the Recipient
of the 2008 Andree Award
South graduate, Kerry K. has been
selected as the recipient of the
2008 Andree Award, a $2,500
scholarship from the National Mu
Alpha Theta given to a former Mu
Alpha Theta member preparing to
teach mathematics.
South Science Olympiad Team
Receives the Spirit Award
South’s Science Olympiad team,
consisting of: Jency P., Jaison P.,
Shweta M., Srikalyan M., Tracy T.,
Merlyn M., Justin M., Bincy O., Jeff

Clarkstown South Students
Take Home Awards at 2008 Regional
DECA Competition
Clarkstown South’s DECA Advisor, Dan
Greaven reported the following
winners of the 2008 Region 3 DECA
competition held in Kingston, NY.
Twenty-six out of the twenty-eight
attendees placed in their events,
with twelve (43%) of the
participating students earning 1st
place awards.

Students Win Highest Honors in
WordMasters Challenge
Two students representing
Clarkstown’s Elementary Schools won
highest honors in this year’s
WordMasters Challenge – a national
language arts competition entered by
over 230,000 students annually,
which consists of three separate
meets held at intervals during the
school year.

Contest
Michael B. and Lisa K., juniors at
South High School, were recognized
as award winners in the Lower Hudson
Valley Chapter of the New York Civil
Liberties Union First Freedom Free
Speech essay contest. Lisa was the
Third Place winner while Mike won
the First Place Grand Prize award of
$350.
South Faculty Recognized
Members of the South High School
faculty were recognized recently for
various accomplishments. Six
teachers won Impact II grants from
the Westchester-Rockland BOCES
consortium of schools.
