The Rockland Read-In: February 15, 2008

 The Day of...

1. Read your own book while the students read (it can be a "grown-up" book).  Students love seeing what their teachers read!

2. If students forget their books, send them to the library between 8:10am-8:50am.

3. Let students get comfortable--they should be free to choose where they read and how they sit (think about how you read when you're at home)

4. Record the total number of minutes your class reads (tally sheets will be distributed the day before)

How Much Time Should We Read?

It varies by grade & the amount of time you have available.

The school with the most minutes wins a prize from BOCES!

Upper grades: Read for your whole ELA block if you want to!  Or break it up: 15 minutes at the start of school, 15 min after recess and 15 min at the end of the day, etc.

Younger grades: You can use your whole ELA block: start with a non-curriculum read-aloud, then give students time to read independently and/or share their books.  Or do shorter segments throughout the day: 10 min to read their book in the morning, 10 min to share their book in the afternoon, etc.

Ideas for all grades: Read your favorite book or your kids' favorite bedtime story.  Have students bring in their all time favorite books to share.  Give students time to share what they’re reading with the class or a partner.  Play a Book-on-CD.

Specials: Start class with a read-aloud of your favorite picture book, or your kids' favorite book, or an art/sports related book.

Get Comfortable...It’s a PJ day so use your blankets & pillows!  Let students sit on the floor, on the windowsill...wherever they can have privacy and comfort.
