Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant

Built on the Hudson River in Northern Westchester, Indian Point 3 Nuclear Power Plant supplies power to more than 100 public agencies in New York City and Westchester County.  It was created in response to the growing energy crisis and increase in oil prices as a result of the 1973 Mideast oil embargo. It began operating in 1976 under the management of the New York Power Authority.

The security of Indian Point 3 has come under increased scrutiny since the terrorist attack of September 11th. Security issues are of paramount concern to the residents of Rockland County, as many Rockland residents reside within the 10 mile evacuation zone. Controversy over the viability of the current evacuation plan has forced government officials to reexamine it, while local agencies have begun to distribute potassium iodide pills to Rockland residents in the event of a disaster.

Discovery of A.I.D.S

In 1981 the New York Times published its first article on AIDS, referring to it as a rare cancer seen in homosexuals. The term AIDS was adopted in 1982. The AIDS virus was discovered in 1983 at the Insitut Pasteur located in France. The first antibody test was developed in 1985. In 1986 The U.S. Surgeon General Everett Koop called for sex educaton. AZT became the first drug developed by Glaxo Wellcome to treat AIDS infected patients.

A variety of local agencies in Rockland County have been created to provide AIDS education and support.  T.O.U.C.H. of Rockland County provides a variety of services, resources and programs to support individuals infected with HIV. For more information about T.O.U.C.H. click here:

The explosion of the internet combined with advances in wireless technology now enables retailers to e-mail shoppers about store sales via cell phone. The Palisades Center Mall located in West Nyack, New York is the first mall in the country to pioneer this technology. The use of global positioning systems makes this service possible. Consumers can register for the service on the mall's website where they can indicate which stores or categories of products they wish to receive information about.
