HISTORY OF ROCKLAND COUNTY
AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY
1900-1925
For over a century, Rockland County fed, refrigerated, and built up New York City with its agricultural, ice, and brick industries. These enterprises spurred the creation of the Tappan Zee Bridge, Palisades Interstate Parkway and the New York State Thruway. This ultimately, led to the ruin of the abundant farmlands, which were needed to accommodate the influx of city people who came to enjoy the rolling foothills of the Ramapo Mountains.
