Art Teacher (if participating) will

introduce project with library media specialist: read Balto or other literature; show videos about sled dogs and mushing. This can be part of tundra study in 3rd grade, state studies and Canada in 5th grade.

introduce students to variety of literature about tundra, arctic, Iditarod/Yukon Quest through Booktalks and/or videos. 

have students do an art project on topic sometime in January and complete at end of February.

have students create a wall map of the trail.  Outline map will be available for them to copy from. 

introduce students to Internet resources on tundra, arctic, Iditarod/Yukon Quest using Big6 research techniques.

collaborate with library media specialist to help students select a musher.

collaborate with classroom teacher to help students select a musher.

 

during the race, have students check each day on their musher on the race website and mark progress on wall map. 

assist in classroom on daily progress of musher.

 

email eIditarod (with assistance from librarian) at each checkpoint as musher progresses.

assist classroom teacher to email eIditarod at each checkpoint as musher progresses!
